Tuesdays with Kerin: The Very Best Half

Happy Tuesday, everyone! Did you miss me? I'm trying out this biweekly posting thing, and I have to say, the past weeks have been semi-eventful. They've been filled with fun, food, and of course, running! Can you believe I'm already on my 5th week of half-marathon training? It's wild to think that I'll be running my first half-marathon in less than 10 weeks! That's crazy!

Week 3 of my half-marathon training was both challenging and exciting! I tackled hill reps for the first time at Miller Hill in Herman Park, although I could only manage 30-second reps. As I progress, those reps will need to get longer, so I’m definitely on the lookout for a bigger hill – maybe signing up for a hilly half-marathon wasn’t the smartest move considering I live in such a flat area, right? To cap off the week, I completed a 5-mile long run, marking the longest distance I've ever run. From here on out, every distance will be a personal record!  It was tough, but I powered through and was able to use my long run to complete my Independence Day 8K Virtual race to make up for the one I missed in June due to my knee injury (An 8K is just under 5 miles).

Week 4 was a much-needed deload week, giving my body the rest it craved. I must admit, my first run of the week was a struggle; my legs felt like lead, making it tough to get going. However, by the end of the week, I was feeling much fresher and ready to tackle my 5K long run. Surprisingly, I felt pretty good throughout the run, even despite the heat. It's amazing how a little recovery can make such a difference!

In other news unrelated to running, my mother and I have been continuing our adventures for Houston Restaurants Weeks. We had our sights set on brunch at 1891 American Eatery last Saturday, but it was bustling with people, so we pivoted to Grace's, which was surprisingly not crowded at all. It turned out to be a great post-run meal! On Friday night, my sister joined us, and we ventured to Avenida Brazilian Steakhouse. The experience was decent; it was my first time at a Brazilian steakhouse, and while it was pretty cool, I realized that I don't eat meat like that, so I'm not sure if I'd go back.

Not part of Restaurant Week, but on Sunday, we also stopped by Sonic Speed Cafe. Anyone who knows me is aware of my obsession with Knuckles from the Sonic movies, so I just had to check it out. The decor was lovely, and the food was pretty good, though I found it slightly underwhelming overall. Still, I'm glad I went!

On the movie front, I rewatched Borderlands with my brother, and we both agreed it’s not exactly a winner. Last week for Movie Tuesday, we decided to watch Alien: Romulus. Now, having only seen Prometheus before, I was definitely not prepared for how disgusting it would be. Surprisingly, despite the two birthing scenes that made me cringe, it turned out to be pretty good overall. Then on Thursday, I treated myself to The Crow, which, let's be honest, is not a great film. You can catch my full review on Kerin's Kritiques. I went in with a glimmer of hope, thinking it might surprise me, but that was my downfall—I should have kept my expectations low. That said, I’m planning to give it another go because I absolutely love Bill SkarsgĂ„rd, and he was fantastic in it. Who knows, maybe I’ll just keep watching it until I actually like it!

Last week, I had a random urge to rearrange my room, and since it was my work-from-home day, I decided to take advantage of my lunch break to move my bed. Of course, that meant I had to shift everything else around too, which led to a whole weekend of cleaning and rearranging. It’s definitely getting there, and I’m hopeful I’ll wrap everything up by this weekend. I also took the opportunity to switch up my decor, bedding, and linens to embrace the fall season. I think I’m officially a seasonal decor person now, and I’m already looking forward to switching things up again for winter!

Until next time!

Au Revoir,

Weekly Obsession: Oh my goodness, I am absolutely consumed by Queen Charlotte! I fell into a YouTube wormhole of clips, and before I knew it, I was rewatching the entire series. Let’s just say, Sunday night turned into an all-nighter for me! The storytelling, the costumes, the drama—everything about it is just captivating. Seriously, if you haven’t watched it yet, you’re missing out on a true gem!

What I'm Reading: Okay, I have to admit, I haven't made much progress with It Starts With Us, but I’m determined to keep pushing through. Fingers crossed I can carve out some time this week to really get into it!

What I'm Watching: In addition to my Queen Charlotte obsession, I’m wrapping up Rings of Power just in time for the Season 2 premiere this week. I’ll be honest, it’s been a bit of a mixed bag for me. While I still don’t find myself fully enjoying it, I can say that the last few episodes have picked up and are definitely more engaging. I’ve got some thoughts brewing, so keep an eye out for my review coming soon! I’m curious to hear what everyone else thinks about the show as we gear up for the new season!
