Tuesdays with Kerin: Along Came Beryl

Last week was all about Hurricane Beryl. The storm made its grand entrance on Monday morning, crashing in and disrupting our peaceful existence by knocking out the power at the cruel hour of 5:30 am. As fate would have it, I was wide awake to witness this chaotic event. The rest of Monday was a tedious affair, mostly spent lazing around, trying to keep boredom at bay while waiting for the power to mercifully return.

On Tuesday, the unbearable heat drove me to seek refuge in the office, where a generator powered one floor, providing a temporary sanctuary to cool off and recharge our devices. Despite not being productive in terms of work, those few hours of cool comfort were a welcome relief. Returning home, the heat was still unbearable, and within just half an hour, I found myself on the move again. Opting to visit the Star Cinema Grill, my brother and I watched Despicable Me 4, a movie I wasn't particularly keen on but served as a means to escape the heat for a couple of hours, even if the film turned out to be terribly ridiculous. Fortunately, upon arriving back home, the power had been restored, marking the end of our temporary ordeal.

Throughout the rest of the week, I worked from home as I was fortunate to have both power and internet connectivity. The new challenge I faced was sourcing food amidst the chaos. It became a task to locate a restaurant that was open or a store that actually had stocked shelves. Despite the hurdles, we managed to overcome the situation and ensure we had enough food supplies to get by.

Over the weekend, things were almost back to normal, but there were still many places without power. I spent time watching some summer league basketball, featuring Bronny facing off against the Rockets, with my brother. We also enjoyed watching episodes of Criminal Minds together with my mother. Saturday was particularly enjoyable as I had a delightful sister date, starting with dinner at P.F. Changs, indulging in dessert from Nothing Bundt Cakes, and then unwinding with some Avatar. I capped off the evening with a spooky Saturday movie night with my brother featuring Longlegs. It turned out I confused Longlegs with Cuckoo, which took me by surprise. You can catch my review on Kerins Kritiques. Sunday, on the other hand, was a lazy day spent writing blog posts and catching up on some TV shows.

By Sunday evening, the city was slowly creeping back to life, and I took some time to reflect on the week that had been. Despite the chaos and challenges, it was a week of unexpected bonding and finding solace in simple pleasures. From the cool refuge of the office to the shared laughs over ridiculous movies, it was a reminder that sometimes, the best memories are made in the most unlikely of circumstances.

Until next week!

Weekly Obsession: No new obsession this week, but I guess that's a good thing. Sometimes it's nice to just coast without diving headfirst into something new.

What I'm Reading: Believe it or not, I did start a new book on Audible. Someone left a comment recommending "Lessons in Chemistry," so I decided to give it a whirl. Unfortunately, I'm probably not going to finish it. The storyline hasn't captivated me, and to be honest, the narrator's voice is practically a lullaby. Every time I press play, I find myself dozing off. Maybe it's just not my cup of tea.

What I'm Watching: I started watching "Mary & George." It's one of those shows where I'm still on the fence. I can't say I'm hooked, but there's something about it that keeps me coming back for more. Maybe it's the characters, or perhaps I'm just curious to see where the plot will go. Either way, I'm committed for now!

Au Revior,

~Kerin
